Bacterial acne, also known as inflammatory acne, presents as swollen, red pimples or nodules on the skin. These may be painful and often contain pus. It is generally more severe than non-inflammatory acne and can lead to scarring if not treated properly. Bacterial acne is caused by the presence of bacteria on the skin, specifically Propionibacterium acnes, which triggers an inflammatory response in the pores.
