Sebum is the oily substance produced by the skin’s sebaceous glands. It serves to protect and moisturize the skin. While sebum itself doesn’t necessarily contribute to acne, when it combines with dead skin cells and bacteria, it can clog pores and lead to acne breakouts.
There isn’t a natural process that specifically “destroys” sebum, as the body naturally produces it for skin health purposes. However, excessive sebum production can contribute to acne formation, and various acne treatments such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and certain antibiotics can help regulate sebum production and prevent acne breakouts.
